About the 12/3 MC Cable
The 12/3 MC cable is an electrical wire designed for power distribution up to 600 volts. Rated for 90°C in dry locations, it is commonly used for branch circuits, feeders, and service entrances.
Its aluminum interlocking armor provides mechanical protection, eliminating the need for conduit. The green insulated grounding conductor enhances safety, while the cable's lightweight design reduces labor costs, making it a cost-effective alternative to piped wire installations.
MC Cable Applications
- Branch, feeders, and service power distribution
- Power, lighting, control, and signal circuits
- Exterior installations, such as outdoor feeders or branch circuits
- Cable tray applications
- Places of assembly
- Aerial installations as support cable or messenger wire
- Under raised floors, such as data centers and computer rooms, where protection from physical damage and enhanced fire resistance may be required
12/3 Solid MC Cable Applications
- Branch Circuits: Supports 20-amp branch circuits in residential and commercial settings. The third wire (red) allows for dual circuits or a 240V circuit with a neutral.
- Switched Outlets/Split Receptacles: One outlet remains powered, while the other is switch-controlled.
- Ceiling Fans with Lights: Enables separate control of fan and light functions.
- Three-Way Switching: Allows switches at both ends to control a single light or multiple lights.
12/3 MC Cable Standards
- UL Listings: UL 83, UL 1479, UL 1569, UL 1581, UL 2556 (File Reference E80042)
- NEC Compliance: 230.43, 300.22(C), 392, 396, 330, 501-505, 518, 520, 530, 645
- Federal Specification A-A-59544 (formerly J-C-30B)
- Meets OSHA and HUD requirements
- UL Classified for 1, 2, and 3-hour fire penetration (R-14141)
- Cable Tray Rated, Air-Handling Space Approved
- RoHS Compliant
- Made in the USA
12/3 MC Cable Construction
Conductors
This aluminum armored cable is available in solid or stranded copper conductors.
- Solid copper provides stable connections for fixed installations.
- Stranded copper increases flexibility, making it ideal for installations requiring frequent bending.
Conductor Insulation
THHN/THWN insulation ensures durability in wet and dry environments, with a 90°C dry / 75°C wet rating, and protects against moisture, chemicals, and abrasion.
Armor
The aluminum interlocking strip armor offers crush resistance and rodent protection, eliminating the need for additional conduit or inner duct.
