About the 10/2 MC Cable:
The metal clad cable is an electrical wire designed for use in power lines not exceeding 600 Volts. The MC wire has an operational temperature rating of up to 90°C in dry locations. The cable is armored with an aluminum interlocking strip, which offers great mechanical protection. The MC aluminum armored wire also has a green insulated grounding conductor. This electrical cable is lightweight and therefore, not labor-intensive, which makes it a cost-effective option over other piped wire installations.
MC Cable Applications:
- Branch, Feeders, and Service Power Distribution
- Power, Lighting, Control, and Signal Circuits
- Exterior Installations, such as outdoor feeders or branch circuit,
- Cable Tray Applications
- Places of Assembly
- Aerial Installations as support cable or messenger wire
- Under Raised Floors: MC cable can be used under raised floors in data centers and computer rooms where protection from physical damage and enhanced fire-resistance may be required.
10/2 Solid MC Cable Applications:
- Appliances: Suitable for certain medium-sized home appliances such as water heaters, dryers, and air conditioning units, depending on their power requirements. Typically, such appliances require a 30-amp circuit.
- General Branch Circuits: In both residential and commercial settings, 10-2 cables can be used for general-purpose branch circuits that supply power to outlets, lights, and small machines.
- HVAC Units: This cable can be used for some smaller HVAC units in residential settings, provided they don't require a separate neutral (since 10-2 has only two conductors plus a ground).
- Outdoor & Landscape Lighting: For powering exterior lighting systems, particularly where the added protection of the metal cladding is desired.
10/2 MC Cable Standards:
- UL 83, 1479, 1569, 1581, 2556, File Reference E80042
- NEC® 230.43, 300.22(C), 392, 396, 330, 501, 502, 503, 530, 504, 505, 518, 520, 530, 645
- Federal Specification A-A-59544 (formerly J-C-30B)
- Meets all applicable OSHA and HUD Requirements
- May be surface mounted, fished and/or embedded in plaster
- Cable Tray Rated, install per NEC®
- UL Classified 1, 2, and 3 hour through (Fire) penetration product, R-14141
- Environmental Air-Handling Space Installation per NEC® 300.22(C)
- RoHS Compliant
- Made in USA of US and/or imported materials
10/2 MC Cable Construction
Conductors:
This aluminum armored cable has a stranded or solid copper conductor. Copper is the most common material used in electrical wires and cables, which is mostly because it has amazing electrical properties and is cheaper compared to other metals. The stranding enhances its flexibility and enables it to carry more current.
Conductor Insulation:
Conductor insulation for this metal clad cable wiring is THHN/THWN: THHN stands for thermoplastic high heat-resistant nylon, which is known for versatility and durability. The double marking THHN/THWN indicates that the electrical wire is suitable for wet and dry conditions equally. Additionally, this makes the cable resistant to corrosion, excessive dryness, and the impact of chemicals.
Armor:
The interlocking aluminum strip serves as armor applied over the cabled together conductors, with the polypropylene tape wrapped around the assembly. The armor makes the MC cable highly resistant from crush and rodent as well as ensures installation with no extra inner duct or conduit.
