How Are Custom Flex THHN THWN Cables Used in Data Center Wiring?

Flex THHN/THWN are some of the most popular power cables used in data centers for a good reason. Read this blog to learn the advantages of such cables for your data hub.

How are THHN THWN Cables Used In Data Centers?

THHN/THWN wires are the most common cables used to power data hubs. They are stable, versatile, and give a compelling performance. The cables are resistant to abrasion, moisture, warm temperatures, and sunlight. Per the National Electrical Code, THHN cable is used overhead in dry locations, while THWN is also great for wet locations as well.

There are variations of THHN/THWN cables for data centers available on the market that carry various ratings in addition to the primary THHN/THWN rating. For instance, there are THHN / MTW / THWN-2 / T90 ratings, and the ones with THHN / THWN-2 / T90 / AWM rating.

Copper vs. Aluminum THHN/THWN

Both aluminum and copper THHN/THWN cables are effectively used in data centers, even though copper ones are more widely used and have a significant advantage because of their conductivity. Copper THHN/THWN cables are not a standard for data centers, but they can be easily used if one needs to keep the data center's budget tight.

THHN/THWN vs. XHHW/XHHW-2 In Data Centers

Aside from THHN, XHHW is another power cable used in data centers to a vast extent. Like THHN, XHHW-2 is a versatile cable that demonstrates excellent performance in data centers. Choosing between the two in data centers is a matter of preference and budgeting.

THHN has thermoplastic PVC insulation, while XHHW has a thermoset XLPE insulation. XHHW-2 has increased flexibility and a more comprehensive temperature range, but it is also more expensive.

Why Flex THHN/THWN?

Flex THHN/THWN cables are an excellent choice for powering data centers because of their flexibility, which offers the potential to fit the cables into tight spaces.

Custom flex THHN/THWN cables are perfect for meeting the unique requirements of a particular data center based on space and design. For example, if you fear that you do not have enough room in your data hub or some sharp turns and angles are difficult to accommodate, custom flex THHN/THWN cables might be what you need. At Nassau National Cable, we offer flex THHN/THWN in different sizes and colors. We work with various data centers all across the country. Flex XHHW/ XHHW-2 are also available on demand. Aside from data hubs, these flex cables are also excellent for water plants.
