SOOW And Portable Power Cables

Conduit, Water, Underground: Common Questions And Misconceptions About SOOW Cable Applications

SOOW is one of the most popular cables, a portable power cord for industrial, residential, and commercial applications. It is a true hit because of its versatility, flexibility, and wonderful price. Still, there are many misconceptions about SOOW cables. At times, people seem determined to use this cable in the wrong way. This blog has gathered common questions that customers tend to ask about SOOW cables.

Can I Run SOOW Cable In The Attic?

Unfortunately, SOOW cords cannot be installed in the attic. The answer is found in article 400.8 of NEC, which contains prohibitions regarding flexible cords. According to this article, SOOW cable is not permitted "as a substitute for the fixed wiring of a structure." The reasoning behind this prohibition? The SOOW cable can be subjected to heat and crack in the attic as time passes. The best possible options to run through the attic are NM-B Romex, MC metal clad, and AC cables. f TC-ER is a budget-friendly alternative that can also be used for such applications.

Can SOOW Cable Be Installed In Conduit?

As a rule, SOOW cables are not allowed in conduit. Article 400.8(6) of NEC states that SOOW cords are not allowed in raceways unless otherwise permitted. This article leaves some room for exceptions, but they are specific and rare. If you've considered SOOW for conduit installations, you might consider TC-ER, which is allowed.

Is SOOW Cable Suitable For Underground Installation?

No, SOOW is not suitable for direct burial in any circumstances per articles 400.4 and 590 of the National Electric Code. The cable cannot be used for direct burial outside the buildings because it would make it subjected to physical damage. An underground feeder UF-B cable may be a viable option for you to install outside.

Can SOOW Cable Be Submerged in Water?

Yes, SOOW cable can absolutely be submerged in water. Water resistance is one of the most profound characteristics of an SOOW cable. SOOW is used in submersible pumps and special cables designed exclusively for submersible pumps.

Can I Use SOOW Cable In a Hot Tube?

Power cables in a hot tube are used to join the power lead and the wall-mounted disconnect. Despite being waterproof, SOOW cable is not suitable for such application. THWN is an excellent go-to cable for a hot tub.
