Description

THHN stands for Thermoplastic High Heat-Resistant Nylon. Recognized for its versatility and durability, it is one of the most commonly used building cables. The double marking THHN / THWN-2 means it is suitable for wet and dry conditions (the "W" indicates water-safe). This cable is corrosion-resistant, tolerates dryness and chemicals, and is rated for up to 90°C in both wet and dry environments. It operates at up to 600 volts, making it reliable for a range of applications.

Why Solid Wire?

  • Provides consistent, low-resistance conductivity for permanent installations.

  • Simplifies connections to switches, outlets, and breakers.

  • Best suited for stable environments with minimal movement.

Common Uses for 10 AWG Solid Wire

  • Residential Appliances: Suitable for medium-duty appliances like electric ovens and water heaters.

  • HVAC Systems: Supports smaller residential or light commercial systems.

  • Lighting Circuits: Reliable for residential and commercial lighting.

  • Conduits: Designed for structured wiring with straight conduit runs.

  • Branch Circuits: Distributes power from service panels to outlets, switches, and fixtures.

Construction

Conductor:
Made of annealed soft copper, meeting ASTM B3 and ASTM B8 standards.

Insulation:
PVC insulation with a flame-retardant, sunlight-resistant, lead-free thermoset jacket. The jacket is color-coded as per ICEA Method 4 for easy identification.

Standards

  • ICEA S-73-532

  • UL 1277: Flame, moisture, and sunlight resistance.

  • UL 1581, UL 83, UL 1063, UL 758

  • ASTM B3 and B8: Copper conductor standards.

  • ANSI/NFPA 70: Safe electrical design.

  • RoHS Compliant

  • Approved for NEC Class I and II systems.

  • Allowed for Exposed Run (ER) and use in Division 2 hazardous locations.

          FAQ's

          What does THHN stand for?

THHN stands for "Thermoplastic High Heat-resistant Nylon-coated."

What is THHN Wire suitable for?

THHN wire is suitable for electrical conduits, indoor and outdoor use (as long as ranked THWN), building wire across industries, and control circuits.

Does THHN Have to Be in Conduit?

Yes, THHN has to be installed in conduit at all times as per NEC. The only exception to this rule is when THHN is installed in control panels.

          Can THHN Be Direct Buried?

THHN does not have an appropriate rating for direct burial because of its construction, but THHN/THWN-2 with a double rating can.

Is THHN Rated for Wet Locations?

THHN is rated for dry locations, while THWN is rated for wet locations.

Can THHN Be Used in Underground Conduit?

The wire used for the underground conduit should have a THWN-2 rating for wet locations.

Can You Run THHN in Walls?

You can run THHN wire in walls within conduit or raceway, but NM-B wire is generally a more popular option for indoor wiring.

Can you use THHN wire for automotive?

Using THHN wire for automotive applications is not recommended.

          Is THHN wire waterproof?

THHN/THWN is not waterproof. While it is suited for damp environments, it cannot be directly submerged in water.

How many #10 THHN in 3/4 EMT?

The NEC allows a maximum fill of 40% for more than two conductors in a conduit. For #10 THHN wires in 3/4" EMT, you can fit up to 10 wires.

How many #10 THHN in 1 EMT?

You can fit up to 16 #10 THHN wires in a 1" EMT conduit.

How many #10 THHN in 1/2 EMT?

For #10 THHN wires in 1/2" EMT, you can fit up to 5 wires.

How many #10 THHN in 1 EMT?

You can fit up to 16 #10 THHN wires in a 1" EMT conduit.
